Interview to the commerce

When you think about your business, what are you most proud of?

From our relationship with our customers, from the magical connection that is established with them when you share your experience, from the smiles that our toys awaken in visitors to the shop. Hearing nice comments or thanks every day is what gives us the most satisfaction. It is also a delight to see our little customers grow year after year.

What is the history of your commerce?

Zigzag Kids has gone through two different stages. In 2013 it opened its doors in a small pedestrian street in Chueca, in a much larger space where we also held workshops and storytelling. Unfortunately, we had little visibility and were forced to move. Now we are at the entrance to the Plaza de Chueca, the place is smaller and we can no longer do activities, but as it is a much busier place it is also more fun, as many people parade around and we never get bored. We love how multicoloured this neighbourhood is...

What is your professional experience?

Before becoming a toy maker, which I did ten years ago as part of a project prior to Zigzag Kids with another partner (Lobo Feliz), I worked for many years at home as a translator, and before that in publishing and in the music industry. I have a background in business administration, but my background is very varied, I like to try different things.

How has covid 19 affected your business?

In a dramatic way, to be honest. We have had to close down and we have a very difficult few months ahead of us. Just when we seemed to be taking off, this drama presents us with a new challenge. But I have hope... This is a long-distance race. Although this year we wont have as many passers-by or tourists, who are key to our operation, the families in the neighbourhood are very loyal to us and I hope that thanks to them we will be able to stay afloat.

What services and products does your business provide?

Zigzag Kids is a childrens bookshop specialising in educational toys. Our traditionally inspired games aim to awaken the senses and skills of children, to teach them something about the world and themselves through a playful activity. We also believe that aesthetics is important, that beautiful, quality toys are a more pleasant and lasting companion throughout childhood. Not to mention books... Spectacular picture books are being made, little works of art full of dreams and values, and it is very exciting to be able to share these materials with our customers.

What other NGOs do you collaborate with?

Every year during the Christmas campaigns we donate a large number of toys and books to hospitals in Madrid and their young patients through Policía sin Fronteras. On occasion we have also collaborated with a day centre run by the Trama Association.
